10 injured in Kisoro bus accident

Kisoro, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Ten people have sustained injuries in an accident along the Kabale-Kisoro road in Kanaba sub county, Kisoro district.

The accident which occurred at 6:00am at Gasheregenyi trading center in Kanaba Hills, about 12 kilometres to Kisoro town involved a Platinum bus.

Abraham Maniragaba, the Kanaba sub county youth chairperson says that the accident happened when the bus registration number UAU 019F that was heading to Kisoro town from Kampala, developed a mechanical problem and an engine shutdown.

According to Maniragaba, when the bus failed to break and negotiate a corner, it veered off the road and rolled down the slope several times. He says that the bus was transporting about 30 passengers.

Another eyewitness says that the unidentified bus driver sustained serious head injuries.

The police were yet to release a statement about the accident.

Kanaba is a known black spot. At the beginning of this month, two people were injured when a jaguar bus registration number UBF 736G heading to Kisoro from Kampala overturned while sloping the same hills.

In September this year, one person died on spot, and four others were injured when a Toyota Premio registration number UAQ 365D heading to Kisoro from Kabale overturned and rolled.

In June 2020, three members of a family sustained serious injuries. They were travelling in a Toyota Hilux Double Cabin registration number UAK 705X heading to Kisoro when the vehicle lost control and rolled down the hill.

In the same month, Hillary Namanya, the Programs Manager of Rukundo International, a local Non-Government Organization in Kabale, and his wife, Barbra Natukunda died after their vehicle, a Toyota Mark II registration number UAG 044M failed to negotiate the corner and swerved off the road before rolling several times.

In July 2018, 22 people died when a lorry Isuzu Elf Registration Number UAW 739M, that was carrying traders failed to negotiate the corner and hit the guard rails on the road.
