92 people die in traffic accidents in Zimbabwe over past two weeks

HARARE, ZIMBABWE | Xinhua | Road traffic accidents killed 92 people and injured 460 others during the period of Dec. 15 to 27 in Zimbabwe, police said on Wednesday.

This is compared to 102 deaths and 289 injuries in road traffic accidents during the period Dec. 15 to 26 last year, national police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said in a statement.

Nyathi said most of the accidents occurred on the country’s highways as a result of speeding, inattention, overtaking errors, overloading, misjudgment, following too closely and recklessness on the part of drivers.

He said one of the accidents happened at the 64-kilometer peg along the Harare-Mutare highway on Wednesday morning, killing five people on the spot and injuring 40 others, 15 of them seriously.

The accident occurred after a bus collided with a haulage truck and a Mercedes Benz, he said.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges drivers to be cautious and promote road safety this holiday. We remind drivers that road safety is a collective responsibility that needs the cooperation of all motorists, family vehicles, public service vehicles and haulage truck operators, among others,” Nyathi said. ■
