Rwandan national sentenced to 18 months for defilement

KIGUM, UGANDA | THE INDPENDENT | Ezekiel Kajeini, a Rwandan national has earned 18 months in prison for defiling a 15-year-old girl. Kitgum Chief Magistrate Robert Ekirita Nashiero convicted and sentenced Kajeini on Tuesday on his own plea of guilt for defilement.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on January 4, 2025, in Bajere South Village, Labongo Akwang Sub-county, Kitgum. The victim, a 15-year-old girl, was reportedly defiled by Kajieni, who is her neighbor.

He was arrested the same day and later remanded to Kitgum Government Prison. Initially, Kajieni had pleaded not guilty to the charge. However, he later changed his plea to guilty, admitting to the offense. Robert Ekirita Nashiero, the Kitgum Chief Magistrate, took into account the convict’s guilty plea when delivering the sentence.

While delivering the sentence, Ekirita noted that Kajieni’s guilty plea saved court time and resources and the sentence aims to serve justice and deter potential offenders. Considering the time Kajieni had already spent in prison, Ekirita revealed that the convict would serve 14 months and 2 days in prison, having already spent 3 months and 28 days behind bars at Kitgum Government Prison.

He cautioned Kajieni to avoid young girls upon his release, especially while he remains in Uganda and this shows how serious the offense is in Uganda which need  the convict to reform when he finishes his sentence.
