
Alebtong, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Authorities in Alebtong District have instructed schools to close early as flash floods continues to ravage the district.
The district has been receiving heavy rains which have resulted into flooding especially in places near river Moroto and other seasonal swamps across the district. So far Adwir sub county has been the most hit with the headquarters, and health center already in water.
The other affected sub- counties are Aloi and Omoro where intermittent springs have emerged causing water to ooze out on the ground, resulting in some infrastructures being destroyed, while in others there is looming threat of destruction.
In a circular dated 11th August 2025, Franco Olaboro, the Alebtong Chief Administrative officer (CAO) who also heads the District Disaster Preparedness Committee argued that such occurrence poses a threat to the entire School Community this the need to close school.
“Under such situations the normal running of the school is threatened, and at risk.” He said before guiding that “schools, such as Adwir, and others that are at threat of being affected by the disaster should administer end of term examinations immediately and break the pupils off for holidays.”
“Marking should proceed, and the learners should be called to collect the report cards on the official date of the closure of the term.”
He also emphasized the need to guide pupils/students should be guided/advised to be very conscious while crossing water areas. “The public should stay calm, but alert.”
According to him, the district is compiling data on the destruction for onward submission to the relevant offices.
Pius Okabo, the District Inspector of Schools confirmed that some primary schools like Adwir and Ajobi in Adwir sub county are already flooded while the roads to other schools such as Alebelebe in Omoro sub county and Tekulo in Abia sub county have been cut off by floods making it inaccessible.
The other school affected by the floods include Ogogong in Aloi sub county.
He is however, worried that if the rains continue pouring, more schools will be affected and thus closed for a long period of time.
Alebtong district has 75 government headed schools with over 90,000 learners.
