Luwero, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Everything is in place for the consecration and enthronement of Rev. Canon Wilson Kisekka as the fourth bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Luwero, scheduled for today (Sunday). By Saturday evening, the function venue at St. Mark’s Cathedral had been fully decorated for the occasion, with tents set up to accommodate the anticipated overflow of guests.

According to Rev. William Mirimu Zziwa, Communications and Information Officer for the Luwero Diocese, the event will commence at 9 a.m. and will be presided over by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu.

Mirimu mentioned that many other bishops had already arrived in Luwero in preparation for the event. Rev. Canon Wilson Kisekka, who was elected on March 6 by the House of Bishops, succeeds Rt. Rev. Eridard Kironde Nsubuga, who retired last year at the statutory retirement age of 65.

Rt. Rev. James William Ssebaggala, a retired bishop of the Mukono Diocese, has served as caretaker bishop of the Luwero Diocese for eight months. His tenure officially ended on Monday, March 18. He assumed the caretaker role in July last year (2023) following the annulment of Rev. Canon Godfrey Kasana Ssemakula’s election. Bishop-elect Kisekka arrived in Luweero last Wednesday.

During a liturgy at St. Mark’s Cathedral shortly after his arrival, Bishop James William Ssebaggala, the caretaker of the Luwero Diocese, and retired Bishop Eridard Kironde Nsubuga encouraged him not to fear his new post. Bishop-elect Kisekka, accompanied by his wife Rachel Kisekka, expressed gratitude to Christians for the warm reception they received upon their arrival in Luwero.
