The 29-year-old sought a transfer after new Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca made it clear that Sterling would not be part of the first-team plans under his management. Sterling now provides Arsenal with an additional attacking option, while Chelsea offloads his substantial wages.
On a busy day for Chelsea, the club also secured Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho during the closing hours of the transfer window. Sancho joins Stamford Bridge on loan, with a clause obligating Chelsea to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season.
The 24-year-old had a well-publicized falling out with Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag and spent the latter half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund. Although he was reintegrated into United’s pre-season activities, it was evident that Ten Hag was open to his departure.
Manchester United also confirmed a last-minute signing, with Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte completing his move from Paris Saint-Germain.
