Busia, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The government is to construct a 50 billion shillings water project in Busia district.
The project funded by the World Bank will extend safe water to 600,000 people in Busia municipality. The 105,000 litres water reservoir will be installed covering 7 hectares of land.
The project Engineer Peter Nyakaana from the Ministry of Water and Environment says that the project has been designed for 30 years to serve people in Busia municipality and will later be extended to other parts of the district.
He said that connection to the water grid will be free of charge to residents in the area.
Nyakaana adds that the project will help in alleviating the problems of water supply.
Sylvester Egesa, the district water engineer says that the town residents have been suffering with water supply shortages during the dry season.
Geoffrey Wandera, the Busia LCV chairperson says that they have been receiving overwhelming complaints from the community demanding for safe water.
Obeki Maanya, the LC1 chairperson of Maduwa B village in Majanji sub-county says that the project will help reduce the challenge of water-borne diseases caused by consumption of dirty water.
The residents appealed to the government to ensure that the contractors to do a great job and on time.
