Busia, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Unknown thugs raided Arubaine market in the Eastern division of Busia municipality and made off with merchandise worth over Shillings 50million. The thugs raided the market on Saturday night and broke in several lockups.

They made off with eight boxes of tomatoes, unspecified bunches of matooke and bags of onions among others. Aisha Salama, a vendor of onions and tomatoes says that she found her store open with all her market goods worth Shillings 680,000 missing. She says the raid is a big blow to her business, adding that she has nowhere to begin from.

Doreen Buteme, another vendor says that she lost onions valued at Shillings 264,000.

Musa Mafabi, the chairman Matooke vendors says that they were shocked to open their stores only to find their products missing. He suspects that the theft was the work of those who took over security from the market management.

Ismael Gidudu Gudio, the chairperson Arubaine market says that the division security committee took over the market and deployed security personnel. He says that it is unfortunate that shortly after handing over the market to the division their goods are missing.

Aisha Kolombo, the LC 3 chairperson Eastern division said that she has not registered any complaint from traders about the theft in the market.
