Lima, Peru | THE INDEPENDENT & IAAF | Hosea Chemutai and Jacob Sande have a chance in Lima today to build on what is already Uganda’s best performance ever at the World Athletics U20 Championships.
With a silver from Loice Chekwemoi in the steeplechase, bronze from Keneth Kiprop and Charity Cherop in the 5000m already bagged, Team Uganda’s three medals cap any previous performance. Uganda has on average returned home from the junior championships with a single medal, with two medals only achieved in 2010, 2018, and 2021.
First in action today will be Hosea Chemutai, 17 in the 3,000m steeplechase. He yet again faces a challenge from Ethiopian and Kenyan favourites in his bid for a first medal. Chemutai run a personal best 8:44.43, fifth best time in the qualifiers.
Jacob Sande,17, will be the last Ugandan in action when he runs the 1,500m final. He clocked 3:43.64 in the 1,500m heats, a time that ranks him 5th in the field of 15 in the final.
Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s Aleshign Baweke (photo above) kicked to the 3000m gold in Lima in a time of 8:50.32, edging out two Ugandans Keziah Chebet who finished 6th in 9:03.56 and Bentalin Yeko 7th in 9:06.55 in Friday’s final.
Uganda’s best performance in Lima has come from Loice Chekwemoi, who grabbed silver in the steeplechase on Thursday.
The 17-year-old African champion become only the seventh girl to bring home glory from the World juniors after Peruth Chemutai, Dorcas Inzikuru, Prisca Chesang, Winnie Jemutai, Annet Negesa and Charity Cherop.
Lima is hosting the World Athletics U20 Championships for the first time, bringing together more than 1,700 athletes and 130 teams.
