Budapest, Hungary | THE INDEPENDENT & URN | Defending champion Joshua Cheptegei has won his third consecutive World Athletics Championship 10,000m title.
He raced into the lead in the last 400 meters, and brushed off a late challenge from Olympic champion Selemon Barega to win gold in 27:51.42.
The world 5000m and 10,000m record-holder has had to overcome injury since last year’s World Championships in Oregon but he returned to medal-winning form at the World Cross Country Championships in February, claiming bronze in Bathurst behind his teammate Jacob Kiplimo and Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi.
Cheptegei attributed his victory to prior and proper preparations for the 2023 World athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
“I attribute this incredible performance to a good training sessions set by my coaches, and this first victory has given me a positive mindset and strength for the remaining 5, 000 meter race which I believe is as well competitive.”
Beatrice Ayikoru, the general secretary of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) says Cheptegei’s performance was incredible. “We are overwhelmed with Joy for what Joshua has done for team Uganda today, and we believe more medals from other athletes are a possibility,” said Ayikoru.
Cheptegei became only the fourth athlete in the world to win a third consecutive gold medal in a World Championship.
