Janet Museveni promises more support for sports
The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni has said the government will increase it’s support towards sports.
“We welcome you our heroes and promise that we shall invest more in sports so that we can get many more medals,” said a happy Janet Museveni on Thursday while welcoming the team from Australia where they participated at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
In the absence of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who traveled to England to attend the CHOGM meeting, the First Lady thanked the team for performing well at the Games during the function at the Entebbe Old Airport VVIP Section.
Uganda won three gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals to finish in 15th position at the Games. Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei won two gold medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m, while Stella Chesang bagged the women’s 10,000m gold medal and Mercyline Chelangat bagged a bronze in the same race. Boxer Juma Miiro picked a bronze medal in the 46-49kg weight category.
” I am happy to be a Commonwealth Games double gold medalist. I feel like a true hero being welcomed by by family and member of the government,” said Cheptegei.
Charles Bakkabulindi, the State Minister for Sports said that he was excited that besides winning medals and performing well, the young athletes have gained more international exposure even in other events like javelin where Uganda was not fielding athletes in the past.
President Museveni will host the team to a luncheon on April 22.
