City Oilers win sixth Uganda basketball championship

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | City Oilers Basketball Club has retained the National League title after defeating Betway Power in Game five on Wednesday night at the Lugogo MTN Arena.

It was City Oilers sixth straight League title after winning 81-73 and 4-1 in the series.

Although the teams played neck to neck in the first and second quarter,of a hotly contested game, a good third and fourth quarter saw the Oilers stretch their lead, thanks to Jimmy Enabu and John Johnson who collected 18 and 17 points respectively.

For the Power side Stephen Wundi and Paul Odong managed 11 points each.

Power led the first, second and third quarter of the game 20-17,and 23-21 and 17-15 before the Oilers took a huge lead of 28-13 to give them the win of the day.

A spirited fight for the Power side ended up in fouls and turn overs which continued to put the Oilers side ahead.

The win becomes Oilers sixth title since 2013 when they first appeared for the finals.The Oilers make history by equaling Falcons who hold six titles in to their name.

In the ladies game, Defending champions of the league, Uganda Christian University Lady Canons lost to new comers Just Kip Living (JKL) Dolphins 64-70 in game one of the best of 7 series. JKL needs three more wins to emerge champions, while UCU needs 4.

JKL’s Jamila Nansikombi had 21 points for the JKL while UCU’s Vilma Achieng and Zainah Angella Lokwameri had 15 points each.
