CLERICS: Sheikh Kamoga and others ordered to defend themselves

The International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kampala has ruled that the 14 people suspected to be behind the killing of Muslim clerics across the country, have a case of terrorism, murder and attempted murder to answer.

Justices Ezekiel Muhanguzi, Jane Kiggundu and Percy Tuhaise  unanimously agreed that after a careful perusal of the prosecution evidence of 36 witnesses and submissions from both parties, there is sufficient evidence warranting each of the accused persons to defend himself.

The Judges also directed that the accused persons led by Amir Ummar Shiekh Mohammad Yunus Kamoga prepare there defence by April 25, 2017.

Prosecution alleges that between December 2013 and June 2015 in Districts of Kampala and Wakiso, with intent to intimidate the public for a political, religious, social or economic gain threatened murder on Ssonko Najib, Bahiga Mustafa, Umar Swadiq, Ibrahim Hassan Kirya, Mohamood Kibaate, Haruna Jemba and Omurangira Kasim Nakibinge.

Its further alleged that on December 28, 2014 at Bwebajja in Wakiso with malice the accused unlawfully caused the death of Shiekh Mustafa Bahiga,  then on June 30, 2015 at Bweyogerere Trading Centre still in Wakiso they murdered Shiekh Ibrahim Hassan Kirya, and on  January 3, 2015 at Watuba-Matugga in Wakiso District they attempted to murder Shiekh Dr. Haruna Jemba.

They have been returned to Luzira prison until the said date.
