Conman arrested for soliciting UGX 350,000 at court premises

Hoima, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The police in Hoima has arrested a 39-year-old man for allegedly soliciting 350,000 Shillings. The suspect has been identified as Elisa Kato, a resident of Kigorobya town council in Hoima district.

Kato was arrested on Monday at the Hoima Magistrates court after he received 350,000 Shillings from Gorret Katusabe, a resident of Kigorobya sub county to help bail out his son.

Katusabe had gone to court to secure bail for her son David Mande, who was imprisoned on charges of causing grievous harm and theft of cattle.

According to Katusabe, while at Hoima Magistrates Court on Monday, Kato approached her saying he would connect her to Elijah Iradukunda, the Hoima Principle Grade One Magistrate to secure bail for her son.

She says Kato demanded 350,000 Shillings from her claiming that the money was being asked for by Iradukunda. However, after waiting in vain for her son to be released, she notified other court officials.

On receiving the information, Iradukunda immediately ordered the arrest of Kato who was immediately taken to Hoima City Central Police Station where he is currently being detained.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson has confirmed the arrest and detention of the suspect.

He has cautioned members of the public to be extra vigilant with unscrupulous people who approach them, especially at court premises.
