Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Construction of the new Buvuma ferry at Port bell is nearing completion, according to the project engineer Ismail Kyazze. The engineer says that they have so far assembled over 80 percent of the expected works on the vessel, which will navigate a route from Kiyindi in Buikwe to Buvuma.
The vessel is assembled by the southern engineering co. ltd-SECO, a marine and offshore engineering company based in Kenya to replace the old ferry which has been reportedly breaking down often, condemning residents to the use of canoes and cargo boats for transport.
Kyazze notes that unlike the old ferry, the new has improved propellers and eco-sounders used in mapping, improved safety measures, a deck to cater for more people and toilets for travellers. The vessel has a capacity for 200 people and 18 small cars.
Hebert Mutyaba, the Head of ferry services in UNRA says the ferry is expected to be completed by January 2020.
Harriet Musiko, a resident of Buvuma says they have been waiting for the new ferry for almost six years adding that the new vessel will give them an opportunity to improve trade, businesses and safety on the water.
