Court bailiff remanded over alleged murder of businessman

Renowned bailiff Moses Kirunda was yesterday arraigned in court.

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Makindye Chief Magistrates Court has remanded a renown bailiff Moses Kirunda to Kitalya prison over the murder of a city businessman Magid Mugwanya.

Kirunda, who last year demolished St Peters Church Ndeeba appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrate Anne Sarah Basemera on Tuesday for the alleged murder of Mugwanya last month.

According to the charge sheet, Kirunda, 50, together with Maj. Nelson Kyatuuka, an officer of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces attached to the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence in Mbuya and others still at large, caused the death of Mugwanya at Natete.

It is alleged that Mugwanya who had parked his car on the roadside saw a woman crying and seeking help. The woman was being dragged by three men into a car at night.

Mugwanya reportedly moved out of his car to help the woman, but one of the three men shot him in the chest, despite identifying himself and raising his hands. He died on the spot and the suspects fled the scene.

Kirunda had gone into hiding following the alleged murder until Monday when he was arrested from Lungujja by operatives from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.

Basemera remanded Kirunda to Kitalya prison until September 1, 2021.

Maj. Kyatuuka was last week charged with one count of murder and two counts of failure to protect war materials in the General Military Court Martial. He denied the charges and was remanded to Makindye Military Police Barracks until August 25.
