The International Crimes Division Court on Tuesday started reading to former LRA commander Thomas Kwoyelo the 93 charges he is expected to be tried for. The acts were committed between 1993 and 2005 during the political insurgency in Northern Uganda.
Kwoyelo is appearing before Justice Susan Okalany who has informed him that at this pre-trial stage he cannot plead to the said charges;
Rather its the prosecution that is disclosing it’s intended evidence and exhibits against him, which the court will examine and determine whether it is sufficient to sustain the said charges for trial.
Justice Okalany will then proceed to confirm the said charges against Kwoyelo, and send the case file to a panel of three Justices of the International Crimes Division court, who have the powers to try him.
Kwoyelo was captured in 2009 from DRC and faces charges of murder, hostage taking , kidnap with intent to murder, aggravated robbery among others.
Prosecution States that between 1993 and 2005 in the present day Amuru district in Northern Uganda, Kwoyelo with others still at large being a commander of the LRA directed an attack to murder and kidnap civilians who were taking no active part in the hostilities.
