Kampala, Uganda |GODFREY SSALI | Convicted former Tabliq Leader Sheikh Muhammad Yunus Kamoga will on May 18, 2018 know whether he should be temporarily released on bail, to pursue his appeal challenging a life sentence he was given for acts of terrorism and murder of Muslim Clerics Mustafa Bahiga and Ibrahim Hassan Kirya.

Shiekh Kamoga appeared before the Court of Appeal on Wednesday and applied for bail before Justice Christopher Madrama.

Through his lawyer Roberts Kagolo, Kamoga informed court that he is of advanced age 66years, suffering from Hypertension, Ulcers and gross obesity which can expose him to cardiac complications, given the prison conditions his health cannot handle.

Sheikh Kamoga has presented seven sureties including Former Makindye West MP Hajji Hussein Kyanjo, Imam Iddi Kasozi a lecturer at IUIU, Sheikh Suleman Kakeeto a Muslim scholar and a one Musa Nanfumb his brother as an assurance that he will return to court and prosecute his appeal to its logical conclusion.

However, State Attorney Lillian Omara objected to Kamoga’s bail application on grounds that there is a high likelihood that Kamoga will abscond since he is serving a punishment for a grave offence.

Kamoga and seven others were last year found guilty of committing acts of terrorism acts by the International Crimes Division of the High court.

Some were sentenced to 30 years imprisonment and others like Shiekh Kamoga to spend the remaining part of their lives in prison, which penalties they have since challenged in the Court of Appeal.
