Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj Gen Paul Lokech, has ordered a probe into how internal police communication is leaked to the public.
Lokech, who will be making 100 days in office on Friday, indicates that he is becoming very much concerned with how confidential information is finding its way to the public and more so on social media platforms.
Lokech has now directed, Brig Chris Damulira, the Police Director for Crime Intelligence, to ensure an investigation is conducted and culprits apprehended.
“It has come to my attention that some UPF personnel leak confidential information to the public and social media. This is contrary to our code of ethics and it must stop henceforth,” Lokech states.
President Yoweri Museveni appointed Lokech to replace Maj Gen Stephen Muzeyi Sabiiti, who had Ochola’s deputy for close to three years.
Lokech’s letter has been shared with all police divisions, stations and units purposely to alert officers about the second in command’s dissatisfaction with information leakage. Police commanders who access radio messages and books have been asked to act responsibly before it’s too late.
“Whoever will be found culpable to this misconduct will be dealt with severely. Commanders act responsibly to stamp out this vice by keeping their radio rooms and books safe. Director CI to take interest and investigate immediately,” adds Lokech.
IGP Ochola mid last year ordered for a probe of officers who were leaking Memos from his office and offices of directors. At least four police officers and three civilians were targeted and ordered to step aside. But they were later exonerated by investigations. This left IGP bothered about who leaks internal information.
