Fort Portal, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | One of the six health workers who contracted Ebola has passed on this morning at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital.
He was by the names of Dr Mohammed Ali, a 37-year-old Tanzanian national. Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng announced his demise earlier on her official Twitter handle. “I regret to announce that we have lost our first doctor, Dr Mohammed Ali, a Tanzanian National, 37yr old male today at 3:15am. He tested positive of Ebola on Sept 26, 2022 and died while receiving treatment at Fort Portal RRH, isolation facility,” the statement reads.
The doctor’s death was first confirmed by Dr Alex Adaku, the Fort Portal Hospital Director while speaking to URN on phone. He however had refrained from revealing the identity of the deceased, mostly due to diplomatic considerations arising from the deceased’s status.
According to Dr Adaku, the doctor who had been critically ill died on Saturday morning. He says that the remaining five medics who are still being managed at the facility are in stable condition.
The hospital has been managing six health workers since Wednesday after their being transferred from Mubende regional referral hospital to Fort Portal for proper management and treatment. The infected group comprised 3 doctors, two nurses and one anesthetist.
The Health Ministry last week confirmed an outbreak of Ebola in Mubende district after a sample taken from a 24-year-old male from Madudu sub-county came out positive with the Sudan strain of Ebola,
As of Friday, according to Minister Aceng , the country had 35 confirmed cases with 7 deaths.
