Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | At least 10 people were killed while 402 others sustained injuries in domestic brawls within the Kampala Metropolitan policing area during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Records at the Kampala Metropolitan police headquarters show that 10 people were killed by their partners between March 18 and July 31, the time when the country was placed under lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus disease.
Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said most of the domestic disputes that resulted in death, serious and minor injuries were instigated by the failure to provide for the family, drunkenness and extra-marital suspicions.
“We so far have 402 cases of domestic violence. The unfortunate part of it is we also registered deaths resulting from domestic violence. This is where a man killed a wife or a wife killed a husband,” Onyango said.
Some of the people killed in domestic fights include Kassim Tumwine, who was allegedly stabbed by his girlfriend Janat Nakibuuka following a disagreement, Sarah Mayiga, who was strangled by her boyfriend, Isaac Mukisa from Maala fishing camp in Koome, Mukono district, and Prossy Namaganda, who was killed by her husband, Abdallah Matovu.
The others are Viola Kakai, 32, a midwife at International Hospital Kampala and resident of Kasangati policing who was allegedly killed by her husband Simon Samanya, Patience Gumikiriza of Nalumunye, Wakiso district and Maria Nanozi, a minor who was killed in a fight by her parent in Wakiso town.
Onyango adds that in order to minimize domestic violence cases, police through Community Liaison Officers-CLOs have intensified talk shows on radio stations and community public systems to encourage couples not to resolve disputes through fighting.
