Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Electoral Commission has set a new deadline for the update of the National Voters Register.
According to EC, the exercise will now start on 21st November 2019 and end on 11th December.
The commission had earlier set November 2019 and January 2020 for the general update of the National Voters Register.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Justice Simon Byabakama, the Electoral Commission chairperson said that says the commission has concluded with demarcation of polling stations and will now embark on updating the register.
During the exercise, registers to be updated are the National Voters Register (Presidential, General Parliamentary and Local Government Councils Elections), Voters Register for Persons with Disability Councils/Committees Elections, Persons with Disability Representatives to Parliament, Persons with Disability Representatives to Local Government Councils and register for voters of Youth Councils/Committees Elections.
Also Voters Register for Election of Youth Representatives to Parliament, Election of Youth Councillors to Local Government Councils, Older Persons Councils/Committees Elections, Workers Representatives to Parliament, UPDF Representatives to Parliament and Representatives of Professional Bodies to the Kampala Capital City Authority.
During the register update, Ugandans who qualify to vote and yet are not registered with the electoral commission as voters shall have their details entered in the register.
According to Byabakama requirements for one to register, they should have a National Identity Card or at least have a NIN number from the National Identification Registration Authority- NIRA.
