Luweero, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The family of the Luweero Town Council Assistant Law Enforcement Officer Wycliff Walugembe is in fear after he allegedly faked disappearance to escape arrest. Walugembe allegedly went missing on Sunday and efforts by his family to locate him have yielded no results.
His wife Phiona Nakyanzi fears that Walugembe could be in danger. She says that they have reported the matter to Luweero Central Police Station.
Luweero Town Council Chairperson Paul Mukungu says that they are equally concerned as the employers and they have made search for him in vain.
But Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson Isah Ssemwogerere downplays fears that Walugembe is in danger. Ssemwogerere says that they suspect Walugembe is in hiding after police summoned him On theft charges.
Ssemwogerere explains that last week, Walugembe executed an operation without the town clerk’s endorsement where he razed kiosks from a disputed piece of land in Kizito zone and later transported them to the town council offices. It later emerged that items worth 1.3 million Shillings disappeared from the kiosks, and a case of theft was filed against him.
He adds that instead of appearing to Police to answer charges, Walugembe allegedly connived with the second wife Norah Namayanja to fake a disappearance.
The Police has since arrested Namayanja to explain the circumstances surrounding Walugembe’s disappearance. Namayanja was allegedly been seen at the home of the first wife day after the said disappearance in possession of Walugembe’s phone, shoes and keys.
