Tanzanian based -lowcost carrier Fastjet has announced plans to cut flights in East Africa starting this month as part of a route rationalisation exercise meant to match frequencies and customer demand.

Fastjet, which launched direct flights between Dar es Salaam and Entebbe International Airport in 2014, says “rationalisation” of its East African flights will take effect on Dec 05.

“The company has continued the process of assessing its route network and has aggressively rationalised routes and or reduced frequencies to more sustainably match supply levels with demand,” the airline said in a statement, adding that the process is nearing completion.

Reports indicates that Fastjet will halt flights between Dar es Salaam and Entebbe and on the same day will also halt flights between Dar es Salaam and Nairobi.

It is not clear at this time whether or not these flights will resume when the new and more cost effective smaller aircraft have joined its fleet.

The airline will also suspend flights from Victoria Falls to Johannesburg compelling tourist from South Africa to fly either via Harare or else via Livingstone across the border in Zambia
