Kampala, Uganda | LOUIS JADWONG | Eighty-eight runs from Arnold Otwani spurred Uganda to a much sought after winning start to the 2018 ICC World Cricket League Division Three in Al Amarat, Oman on Friday.

Otwani opened Uganda Cricket Cranes’s batting and hit the tournament’s first 50, as Uganda raced to 167 for 5 in 36.2 overs, for a five wicket victory over Denmark.

Today’s victory brought to an end a disastrous opening match record for Uganda at the ICC qualifying tournaments. In 2017, hosts Uganda did not recover from a day-one loss to Canada in the ICC WCL Division 3  and were relegated to Division four, where they won earlier this year, but after surviving another false start – this time against Malaysia.

Wicket-keeper Otwani and bowler Charles Waiswa made sure there was also no repeat of the Uganda-Denmark thriller in Malaysia, where Uganda won by a single run, with the very last ball.

After four catches by Otwani that ensured Denmark struggled from the start, bowler Charles Waiswa mopped up the tail-end with figures of four for 25 in 8.4 overs.

Uganda’s innings had actually started disastrously, with Roger Mukasa out for a duck. Otwani stabilized the innings, hitting 15 fours in the 86 balls he faced before being caught, 12 shy of a century as Uganda charged towards a 166 target.

He had done the damage with a man of the match performance to that point, and by the time he went off, Uganda was only 36 short off their target, at 130-5 in 28 overs.

Denmark can be said to be the weakest of the sides Uganda will face in this tournament, but a winning start will give Steve Tikolo’s side the belief they need to match the very best.

Up next is the United States, Saturday.
