Formalin suspects ask Kampala court to change guilty plea

Kampala, Uganda | GODFEY SSALI | Kampala City Hall Court has sent back on remand the six people who were arrested over spraying suspect harmful chemicals on meat and fish 

The six were expected to receive sentence on Wednesday after admitting fault last Friday, but when they re-appeared before presiding Grade One magistrate Beatrice Kainza the suspects requested that the charges be read to them again.

Magistrate Kainza has now adjourned the case to Thursday when she will make a ruling on whether the law permits her to re-read charges to an accused person who has already accepted the offense.

The accused Erias Kafumba, Isa Ssenoga , Isma Mutebi, Umar Kalyango, Baker Mulondo and Ibrahim Ssekitto  were  arrested last week  from areas of Nakasero Market, Nankulabye and Ntinda Market  in  an operation by KCCA health and  law enforcement officers.

During the said operation, it was established that the suspects spray harmful chemicals on both fish and meat they sell to the public in order to chase away and kill flies. The chemical is suspected to be formalin.

They are facing charges of causing a nuisance to exist.

According to a KCCA prosecutor, the suspects are likely to face a two-year imprisonment or pay a fine of not less than sh180,000 .
