Former Foreign Minister Kibedi dies in London

Joshua Wanume Kibedi,  Foreign Minister in the early days of the Idi Amin regime, died Monday in a London hospital.

Deputy Prime Minister Kirunda Kivejinj announced  the death of Ambassador  Kibedi. He died at dawn at St. Thomas Hospital in London, according to Kivejinja.

Kibedi famously fled to exile soon after his uncle and leading politician Shaban Nkutu was murdered by Amin in 1973.

Kibedi, brother to then First Lady Mama Maryamu, was in Ghana and when he confirmed the killing, he resigned as Foreign Minister and did not return. He then became a leading critic of the Idi Amin regime.

His last appointment since returning from exile after the fall of Idi Amin was in 2010, when government appointed him chairman of the Immigration and Citizenship Board. He had earlier been appointed  Ambassador to the United Nations and later Ambassador to the Soviet Union.
