Four people charged for examination malpractice

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Four suspects including a teacher have appeared before the Kasangati Grade One Magistrates court for examination malpractice. The suspects are Guloba Tito, a resident of Seeta in Mukono district, Edward Kapale, a resident of Nakulabye in Kampala, Francis Etwalu, a resident of Seeta in Mukono and Filbert Ayesiga, 37 a teacher and resident of Kapanyi village in Masindi district.

Court presided over by the Kasangati Grade One Magistrate, Beatrice Kayinza heard that the suspects together with others still at large, while in Wakiso district between November 8th and 9th, 2022 were found in possession of the electronic examination paper material and information. The suspects pleaded not guilty.

Ayesiga told the court that his name came as a surprise to him since he was working as a Uganda National Examinations Board-UNEB scout in Kiruhura district. Kayinza charged the suspects with unauthorized possession of examination material or information contrary to section 25 (1) of the UNEB Act and remanded them to Kasangati prisons until February 21, 2023 for a hearing.

The prosecution of the suspects coincided with an announcement from UNEB that they had completed marking all national exams and are scheduled to release the Primary Leaving Examinations tomorrow.

During the course of the exams last year at all levels, UNEB stepped up surveillance against examination malpractice leading to the arrest of several people for impersonation. The suspects appeared in courts in Kira, Nabweru, and Gomba. Kawempe division in Kampala had the highest cases of examination malpractice.
