TUMWEBAZE: Government to hold monthly open days

Kampala, Uganda | JULIUS BUSINGE | Government is set to hold monthly open events in which its agencies and departments will explain to the public matters service delivery, according to the Minister of Information Technology and Communications Frank Tumwebaze.

Tumwebaze was speaking Thursday Sept. 21 at the ICT Ministry headquarters in Kampala at a joint press briefing for Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) and the ICT Ministry regarding the forthcoming Taxpayers’ Appreciation Week that would take place at Kololo Independence grounds from September 27-29.

He said that this move will make government entities that careless about talking to the public about their service delivery as a component of government achievements.

He listed entities – Uganda Revenue Authority, National Water and Sewerage Corporation, Uganda National Roads Authority, Kampala Capital City Authority, Uganda Communications Commission and Uganda Registration Services Bureau as some of the entities that are performing well in public communication.

“I am calling to whip you out of your boardrooms to talk to the public about the services you offer,” Tumwebaze said.

The Minister’s comments come a few weeks after President Yoweri Museveni wrote a letter to Prime Minister, Ruhakana Rugunda to conduct an assessment on the contribution of each of the government agencies to national development programs and report by end of this year. It is hoped that some agencies will be closed once found underperforming or not adding value to national development.

Meanwhile, Tumwebaze urged all agencies to utilise space offered by URA on the Taxpayer Appreciation Week to showcase their work to the general public.

Vincent Seruma, the assistant commissioner for public and corporate affairs said the event will serve as a forum for demanding accountability from government by the public on matters taxation and will run under the theme; Appreciating Uganda’s Taxpayer; the nexus between public accountability and tax compliance.

The public will also access free – legal aid services, tax advisory services, blood donation and related health campaigns, land registration and motor vehicle inquiry services and more.

  1. Hon Tumwebaze needs to explain the abundant lie about free weekend WIFI in Kampala, Entebbe and Jinja, that he made some time, honestly why don’t you for once help Ugandans with cheaper but available internet other than free and not available?
