Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Minister of Internal Affairs Jeje Odongo has said that Government does not know the whereabouts of the 365 people of the 423 presented as missing by the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Odongo was presenting to Parliament a statement on missing persons where he noted that out of the list of 423 people presented by NUP, they only know 58 of these who have been verified, on Thursday.
The Minister informed Parliament that after his statement on missing persons last month, a number of MPs presented to him additional lists of persons whose whereabouts remain unknown. But he adds that after close scrutiny, the government can only account for 58 people who are either on remand or have since been released.
Odongo says that the 365 could not be verified because the people who provided the names did not indicate the time and location of the arrest. He says information from intelligence indicates that these people could be hiding for fear of getting arrested.
He adds that from the November riots 1,035 suspects were arrested, 901 charged in court, 734 were remanded, 167 released on bail, 113 were released on police bond, 21 were cleared and released by police while 51 were convicted and sentenced.
The speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga appealed to the government to restrain from violating rights when enforcing the law saying it is sad to be mentioned as a country that is leading in violence and brutality.
Earlier in the day, different women and NUP supporters took to the streets in Kampala and Parliament demanding that their people be released either dead or alive.
