Arua, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The government will next month carry out indoor spraying of mosquitoes in districts of Lango and West Nile.

Dr. Henry Mwebesa, the Director General Health Services in the Ministry of Health on Thursday said that spraying the mosquitoes will be rolled out in the districts of Madi Okollo, Koboko, Terego, Maracha, Adjumani, Yumbe, Moyo, Obongi, Arua, Dokolo, Kalaki, Amolator, and Kaberamaido.

He further explained that the exercise will be implemented through the existing institutional leadership structure to a tune of 8.5 million dollars.

Three years ago, government distributed mosquito nets in different parts of the country which reduced malaria cases in the country.

Dr. Mwebesa says that at the moment, the mosquito nets are worn out that there is a need for another intervention to supplement the use of mosquito nets.

Dr. Jimmy Opigo, the Assistant Commissioner in-charge of health services and malaria control program, said that currently, there is no medicine for malaria apart from artemisinin-based combination therapy.

Between October 2021 and March 2022, Malaria Consortium gathered data on malaria incidence in the Lango and Acholi regions.

In October 2021, 512 cases of malaria were recorded per 1,000 people in these regions. As of March 2022, we were able to observe considerable success in lowering the number of malaria cases – 70 percent of the Lango and Acholi districts achieved a malaria incidence rate below 154 cases per 1,000 people.
