Health workers in Moroto start community treatment for cholera

Moroto, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Health workers in Moroto have embarked on community outreach programs providing treatment for Cholera.

Cholera has continued spreading to other parts of Moroto including Municipal Council and Rupa sub county where new cases are being reported.

According to records from the District Health Department, the number of cholera cases has reached 200 since the outbreak was confirmed on May 12th. Records also indicate that 172 people have recovered while 19 are still under care.

The in-charge of the Cholera Isolation Centre at Loputuk health Centre, Phillip Lotee says medical teams have started providing treatment and aqua tablets in the communities.

The Moroto District Water Officer, Musa Lowot says that in a bid to contain the spread of the disease, 13 boreholes have been repaired and handed over to the community.

Lowot, however expressed concern over poor sanitation largely due to lack of pit latrines. He said giving communities clean water without taking into account the importance of using latrines would not solve the problem of cholera in the district.

“As a local government, we are playing our part but unless the community appreciate the importance of using latrines in disease control, then our efforts may not do enough,” warned Lowot, the District Water Officer.

Lowot, says that they have started creating awareness about the importance of each household having a latrine.
