High Court Orders Uganda Law Society to Follow Election Regulations

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Civil Division of the High Court in Kampala ordered the Uganda Law Society to stick to their Election Regulations 2016 when selecting representatives on boards, committees or commissions of its different statutory bodies.

This was after one of the members, Steven Kalali dragged the society to court challenging the law society’s maintenance of some representatives, which he said contravenes the Uganda Law Society Act and Election Regulations 2016.

In the ruling delivered by Justice Boniface Wamala, Uganda Law Society has for a long time breached the Election Regulations 2016 without necessarily pointing fingers at its current regime led by President Bernard Oundo.

“I have seen a breach of provisions of the ULS Act and Election Regulations. The only order available to the applicant and which I accordingly issue is an order of a permanent injunction restraining the respondent’s counsel from any further breach of the act and the Election Regulations regarding the election of the society representatives,” ruled Justice Boniface Wamala.

Also, the Court reminds the law society to treat elective positions as elective.
