High voter turn up in Kitgum as NRM conducts primaries

Kitgum, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT | Several polling stations within Kitgum Municipality have registered a high turn up of voters in today’s National Resistance Movement- NRM party primaries.

By 8 am, a sizeable number of voters had turned up at Apollo Grounds in Central Division to check on their names in anticipation of the polls that started at 10 am.

Voting exercise is expected to kick off with the position of Women Member of Parliament representatives and later constituency representatives.

Apollo Grounds has a total of 371 voters expected to cast their votes by lining behind their preferred candidate’s portrait or agents.

In Te Acut Polling station also in Central Division, by 8:30 am, there were more than 30 people who had already viewed their names according to the Registrar Gloria Ayenyo.

She, however, notes that some of the voters who turned up didn’t find their names and that verification was still on-going.

In Te-Olam West Land B polling station in Kony paco cell, Central Division more than 50 people had already camped at the polling station awaiting verification of their names. The situation is however different in Chua East Constituency where few locals had turned up by 9 am.

In areas visited by URN reporter in Lapana Polling station, where the incumbent Chua East Legislator Henry Okello Oryem is a voter, voting materials had not yet arrived with very limited presence of voters.

Other polling stations included Bolokome and Omiya Anyima Central in Omiya Anyima Sub County where voting is expected to kick off late.

Cyrus Odongkene, the Kitgum NRM Party Registrar says election materials had already been dispatched to various areas in the District.

Some 70,000 voters are expected to take part in voting in Kitgum District alone.
