Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Indian Association in Uganda marked a significant milestone by celebrating 101 years of its existence in Uganda with a grand event held at the Lugogo Cricket Oval over the weekend.
The event also marked India’s 76th Independence Day, originally observed on August 15th.
Paint manufacturer Kansai Plascon was one of the co-sponsors of the event in line with its corporate social investment strategy of supporting communities.
Its Managing Director Santosh Gumte said, “We are proud to be part of this vibrant celebration and continue our tradition of giving back to the community.”
Minsa Kabanda, Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, and Dorothy Kisaka, Kampala Capital City Authority Executive Director graced the event, underlining its importance.
The event featured captivating performances by top Indian artists such as Shivam Singh, Jared Ali, and Senjuti Das, along with Indian dance groups that electrified the night.
Founded in 1922, the association has been a cornerstone of the Indian community in Uganda, fostering peace and promoting social cohesion.
Through its charitable activities, the association played a pivotal role in eradicating Indophobia from the Ugandan African community, facilitating the harmonious coexistence of both communities.
Today, the Indian community, despite representing less than 1% of the population, contributes a significant amount of tax revenue to the Ugandan economy.
