Inmate in Kakumiro dies while escaping custody

Kakumiro, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | An inmate from Kyabasenge prison in Kakumiro has collapsed and died while attempting to escape from lawful custody. The deceased is Henry Tumukunde, 20, a resident of Bugwara village in Nalweyo sub-county.

The incident happened on Saturday afternoon, according to information obtained by URN. It is alleged that prison authorities had sent Tumukunde together with other inmates to collect firewood from the neighboring Kyabasaija village when he attempted to escape.

Prison warders started pursuing him as he took off and he collapsed in the process. He was rushed to Kakumiro health center IV where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A warder from the prison told URN on condition of anonymity that while his colleagues were gathering firewood, Tumukunde tried to escape prompting them to pursue him.

The Uganda Prison Services Spokesperson Frank Baine couldn’t be reached for comment as he neither picked up nor returned calls to his known mobile number. Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson says police have handed the deceased’s body to his relatives for burial.

According to Hakiza, the deceased has been battling charges of threatening violence where he threatened to kill his father over land. This incident comes just hours after unknown assailants raided Kyakasengura prison barracks in Kibaale and stabbed a prison warder in the stomach using a sharp knife.

Private Daniel Otimong is nursing injuries at Mubende hospital. The incident happened around 11 pm on Saturday night.
