Kween, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Commonwealth gold medalist, Jacob Kiplimo has unveiled the “Discovery Uganda Championships” to identify young talents. According to Kiplimo, he will use the Championship set for January 23, 2023, to spot and support young talents.
He explains that most talented athletes, give up in villages due to the lack of opportunities to expose their talents. “We are soon upgrading in marathon, and Uganda deserves to have another Kiplimo-like talent to fill the Track and Cross Country gap, where Uganda has registered great victories in international competitions,” Kiplimo told URN in Kween.
He explains that his plan is to join the 10,000 and 5000m World record holder Joshua Cheptegei who is equally supporting vulnerable athletes who have the potential to realize their dreams in the sport. Cheptegei has welcomed Kiplimo’s decision describing it as a great vision.
“Kenya has a lot of athletes with great talents because they support one another, so this is the same way to go for us to have more runners in the country,” he said. Benjamin Njia, the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) national coach and vice president of technical, says Uganda stands a chance of advancing to a better level since the athletes have discovered a need of supporting each other.
