Jinja East voters go to polls as FDC’s Mwiru and NRM’s Nabeta tussle it out

Kampala, Uganda | GODFREY SSALI | Voters in Jinja East go to the polls Thursday to elect a new Member of Parliament in a hotly contested by-election.

The seat fell vacant in January following a Court of Appeal ruling that upheld an earlier ruling by the Jinja High Court which overturned NRM’s Nathan Igeme Nabeta win, because of rigging through falsification of election results  at Danida A-D polling station, which put him (Nabeta) at an advantage in the February 2016 elections.

The Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi told the press yesterday that the commission has finalized arrangements for Thursday’s polls.

He said all election materials needed have been delivered at the municipality divisions in the constituency for voting in all the 47 polling stations which starts at 7.00am and end at 4:00pm, after which tallying starts.
