Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Minister of Kampala Betty Amongi has announced the suspension of charges being imposed by various Taxi Associations in Kampala and the Greater Metropolitan Area for a month. She said that during this period, there will be no withdrawal of the collected welfare fees held on the accounts of the various Taxi Associations until the sector is regularised.
“There are a number of concerns and complaints that have come to our attention during the registration of taxis for example the charges being imposed in Taxi Parks. All Taxi drivers being forced to pay fees are encouraged to report the cases of extra charges to KCCA Park Administrators,” she said.
The charges include entry fees for each taxi that range between 1,000 to 4500 shillings, loading fees of 3,000 to 20,000 shillings for each taxi and daily welfare fees ranging between 20,000 and 50,000 shillings.
Amongi revealed that her ministry has engaged with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives to offer technical support to the Directorate of Gender, Community Services and Production at KCCA in handling the issues of registering Taxi SACCOs.
KCCA had earlier signed an MOU with Private Taxi Parks not to charge parking fees exceeding sh3,500 per vehicle per day.
“We have however received a series of complaints from various individuals in the taxi business indicating that some private parks are charging higher amounts than those agreed upon in the MOU —this is unacceptable. Failure to comply with the fees determined as per the MOU shall lead to KCCA revoking the MOU and degazetting such parks as several landowners in the city have expressed interest in offering such services at the rate KCCA has set.”
