Karenga district officials in panic over anonymous threatening leaflets

Moroto, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Tension is high among Karenga district local government officials following life-threatening leaflets listing the names of the officials to be gunned down. It comes two days after unidentified gunmen shot dead the Assistant Chief Administrative Officer, Simon Peter Omony.

He was gunned down at his residence in Karenga town council around 9 pm on Friday last week. As security officials are trying to find killers, this morning residents were shocked to see anonymous leaflets listing the names of the next officials to be gunned down.

Those on the list include the LC V Chairperson, Felix Locale, Riews Ilukol, and Peter Abaach Peter. Locale told URN that the leaflets have demoralized the spirit of Karenge district officials. “As we woke up this morning we got those letters pinned on the trees at the district, other copies were pinned on district notice boards,” he said.

Filbert Ochailap, the Karenge Resident District Commissioner, says that security has the capacity to get rid of criminals trying to frustrate the smooth operation of the district. He advises the listed officials to calm down, saying the investigations were ongoing to apprehend the culprits. “What I can tell the people is if you have issues with service delivery please come openly and dont take the life of any person,” he said.

Micheal Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional police spokesperson, said police will use the letter to do forensic investigations and called for calm in the district. “We will get those culprits. What we only appeal to the public is to help security with vital information,” he said.
