Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The National Agriculture Advisory Services (NAADS) has distributed 1,300 improved banana seedlings to farmers in Kasangati town council in Wakiso district. The beneficiaries are from Kabaga, Katadde, Gayaza, and Kabaganda villages among others.

Major Ismail Mugerwa, the Kyadondo East NAADS coordinator says there was a need for the farmers to get high breed bananas in the area to increase their productivity. He says that they decided to distribute the seedlings since it is raining to help the farmers catch up with the rains.

Tom Muwonge, the mayor of Kasangati town council says that about 3,000 farmers were expected to receive the banana seedlings but NAADS only managed to distribute 1,300 seedlings leaving out other farmers. He asked NAADs to cater for other farmers who can’t engage in crop production since his town council is in an urbanized setting.

Israel Kabonge Ssalongo, a resident of Katadde says that the farmers have a lot of hope in the improved banana seedlings since they grow very fast and are high yielding compared to the local varieties.

NAADS is a statutory Semi-autonomous body under the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries, and Fisheries mandated to facilitate efficient and effective delivery of agricultural advisory serviced production and productivity in the country.
