Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Two candidates vying for the Lubaga North parliamentary seat defied the Electoral Commission to hold post-nomination activities on Thursday. They include incumbent MP Moses Kasibante and the official candidate of the National Unity Platform Abubaker Kawalya.

The Electoral Commission had earlier on guided that no events or processions would be held by candidates before and after nomination to avoid attracting crowds at a time when the country is battling a surge in cases of coronavirus disease, which spreads mainly through person-to-person contact.

But after his nomination from the Electoral Commission office in Ntinda, Kasibante led a procession to Lubaga from where he told his supporters that his challenger, Kawalya, was not a genuine opposition candidate. He faulted him for seeking an alliance with the NRM during his bid for KCCA speaker’s job.

The two candidates competed for the National Unity Platform flag before it was officially handed to Kawalya after the vetting process. However, Kasibante alleges that Kawalya does not have the kind of experience needed to enhance democracy and good governance.

Meanwhile, although he held no procession, Kawalya held a mini-rally where he had a rebuttal against Kasibante whom he said has lost political clout and should not seek another term of office. He added that Kasibante’s rejection as the official NUP candidate was justified considering his lukewarm relationship with opposition figures.

Kawalya said that he will continue persuading leaders like Kasibante to return to NUP and fight a unified battle against the NRM.

Kawalya also alleged that Kasibante has been fueling attacks against his campaign team leading to the arrest of his agents and influencing police actions against him.
