Kiprotich finally selected for Tokyo olympics

Ugandan athlete Stephen Kiprotich

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has finally selected star athlete Stephen Kiprotich on the marathon team for the Tokyo Summer Olympics.

The development comes after Kiprotich’s chances of taking part in the Olympic Games had reduced after he failed to record better times in the recent NN Mission Marathon in Enschede, Netherlands last month where he finished fifth.

However according to the UAF Publicity Secretary a Technical Commission meeting convened last week in Kampala and selected three men who included 2012 London Olympic gold medalist Kiprotich. The 2012 Gold winner will be joining National Record holder Filex Chemonges and Fred Musobo on the team.

Kiprotich will be making his third appearance in the Olympics. In 2016 summer olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil he finished in 14th place.

According to Mawerere, the women’s marathon team will have Juliet Chekwel who ran 2:23:13 in Zurich Marathon on February 2, 2020 and Immaculate Chemutai who clocked 2:29:09 during the Xiamen Marathon on April 11, 2021.

Already three boxers have also qualified to represent Uganda at the Tokyo Olympics that will take place in July 23 to August 8th in Tokyo, Japan.
