Mukono, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Over 50 residents of Bamutakudde in Kyampisi Sub County, Mukono district have accused a Chinese firm of blasting rocks in the area in disregard of their safety.
The stone quarry in the area belongs to China Communications Company. The company sells the blasted stones to factories and road construction companies.
According to residents, they have lost their houses and other vital installations due to the alleged negligence of the company. They say that their pleas to the police and local leadership for help haven’t yielded any results.
Sauda Namyalo one of the residents affected by the stone quarrying activities says that her house was hit by flying rocks and has never been compensated despite making various attempts.
Samson Muyinda, another resident says his house was damaged but was forced to refurbish the house using his costs. He says that after he was compensated in 2018, he renovated his house, but it was again damaged by the sound of the blasting rocks.
82-year-old Maria Nalubaale, says that the firm should consider the lives of residents and compensate them for lost property. She says that the compensation she received was inadequate to renovate her property which included a house and gardens.
The China Communications Company Site Manager Son Liong says that the affected residents were each given 1.8 million shillings as compensation for their damaged houses. He however notes their offices have always been open to every resident with complaints.
