Due to the increasing number of Ugandans facing starvation, the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has tasked the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to quickly operationalize the contingency fund to cater for emergencies.

This was revealed when Keith Muhakanizi, the secretary to the Treasury appeared before the committee  to answer queries arising from the 2014/2015 Auditor General’s report.

The legislators were concerned with the diversion of Shs140billion in the contingency fund to the Parliamentary Commission yet government could not offer enough food relief to areas in need including districts of Isingiro, Rakai and Karamoja region.

More than 1.3 million are said to be facing food shortage across the country.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda November 14  flagged off a team of ministers and technical staff who will go around the country to sensitize citizens about how to deal and cope with the current food situation and other effects of the prolonged drought.

The teams including officials from agriculture, water and environment, meteorology, finance, information and national guidance in the Office of the Prime Minister. They will be working with local leaders.
