Kampala, Uganda | KAWOWO SPORTS |  Moses Basena and Fred Kajoba will be under scrutiny when Uganda Cranes host Rwanda’s Amavubi in the first leg of the CHAN 2018 qualifiers play off.

The two sides face off on Saturday at St. Mary’s Kitende in what is the first fixture for the national team since the resignation of Serbian, Mulitin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic.

Basena and Kajoba, former assistants to the departed Serbian were confirmed as interim for the two games against Rwanda and will also be in charge for the back to back 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Egypt.

“Truth be told, they must be motivated given we are almost new technical staff,” Basena said, referring to his opponents Rwanda. “But they will be surprised. They are not new opponents so we know what to expect and have prepared for the game in all aspects,” he added.

Tough task for CHAN debutants Egypt

Johannesburg, South Africa | AFP |  Egypt debut in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) this weekend at home to formidable Morocco, ending an unexplained nine-year absence from the competition.

Matches in the biennial competition carry full international status despite being restricted to footballers registered with clubs in their country of birth.

It was introduced by CAF in 2008 amid concerns that home-based stars were getting few national team opportunities with compatriots playing in Europe dominating squads.

The Nations Championship has grown quickly in popularity and crowd appeal and 49 of 54 CAF members entered the 2018 tournament, with Kenya hosting the finals next January.
