Nairobi, Kenya | AFP | Kenya’s Supreme Court is giving its full judgement on the annulled Kenya Presidential election.
The full judgement points out in detail why the Supreme Court took the unprecedented decision to overturn the August 8 poll.
Supreme Court Chief Justice David Maraga in his brief ruling nearly three weeks ago mentioned only “irregularities and illegalities” in the transmission of vote results, when he annulled Kenyatta’s victory over his rival Raila Odinga.
The Supreme Court made history in Africa by declaring the victory of President Uhuru Kenyatta in the August 8 election “invalid, null and void”, citing widespread irregularities in the electronic transmission of vote results.
It was the first time a presidential election result has been overturned on the continent and follows three previous failed bids by 72-year-old Odinga for the presidency — in 1997, 2007 and 2013
A day before Wednesday’s full judgement, Kenya’s chief justice hit out at political leaders and their supporters over a wave of threats against his court, which annulled last month’s presidential election over widespread irregularities.
Scores of supporters of President Uhuru Kenyatta gathered outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday to demand he be sworn in, before being dispersed with teargas, while isolated protests blocked roads elsewhere in the country.
