Mbarara, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Mbarara city authorities have extended the livestock quarantine to two more areas to contain the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
Dr. Moses Amanyire, the senior veterinary officer Mbarara city says that they have added Nyamitanga and Nyakayojo areas on the list of areas affected by the quarantine.
The others that have already been under quarantine are Biharwe, Kakiika and parts of Kakoba, which are the most affected. These have been under quarantine since February this year.
He says that they have to some extent contained the disease but residents have failed to follow the recommendations and advice which has spread the disease to other places.
Amanyire says that they have stopped the movement of cattle, goats, sheep, pigs and their products with immediate effect.
James Mwesigye, the Mbarara Resident Commissioner who is also the chairperson of the FMD task force says that they will arrest whoever is found flouting the guidelines.
Asuman Kihogo, a butcher in Rwebikona market says that they only get cows from areas without reported FMD cases.
Mbarara city registered the first case of FMD on January 14th 2021. The commissioner in charge of animal health placed the area under quarantine on February 5th, 2021 in line with the animal disease act cap 38.
FMD is a severe, highly contagious viral disease of livestock that has a significant economic impact. The disease affects cattle, swine, sheep, goats and other hoofed ruminants.
