Makerere demands clear terms for medical interns

Makerere University

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Makerere University is seeking to enter a Memorandum of Understanding with the Health Ministry with clear guidelines for the placement of medical students for internship in Mulago National Referral Hospital and other government facilities across the country.

Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, says the College of Health Sciences has complained to him that their medical students are being placement in government facilities.

The Health State Minister in Charge of Primary Health Care, Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu blames the problem on the high student numbers with private universities increasingly enrolling large numbers of students.

She says as result, wards are crowded something that discomforts patients.

According to a report by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council, there are ten universities offering medical and dental degree courses across the country.
