Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Two leaders of Makerere University staff associations have been ejected from the staff mailing lists under unclear circumstance, URN has learnt.
The affected are associate Professor Edward Nector Mwavu, the deputy chairperson of the Makerere University Academic Staff Association –MUASA and Benet Magara, the chairperson of the Senior Administrative Staff Association –MASA.
The webmail, which is hosted on the official university website, is meant to enhance communication among the university community. The duo was removed from the staff mailing list on Tuesday, according to information obtained by our reporter.
“This matter came up in our management meeting. I actually thought it was a joke. I am surprised that it was actually implemented,” a source from the Directorate for ICT Support (DICTS) told URN on Thursday morning.
In a letter addressed to Samuel Paul Mugabi, the Director Directorate for ICT Support (DICTS) the two staff leaders, say they learnt of their removal from the Makerere University webmail list on August 6, 2019 when they failed to log-in despite various attempts.
“We therefore decided to visit the DICTS Office at COCIS building [College of Computing and Information Sciences] where it was confirmed to us that we have been removed from the mailing list,” said the two staff Association leaders.
Adding that “On further enquiry as to why this happened, your staff informed us that they received a directive from you to effect the removal but they were not privy to the reasons.”
The staff leaders have asked the ICT Director to furnish them with an explanation as to why he directed for their removal from the staff mailing list as well as reinstate them.
Sources say the move is aimed at destabilizing the staff leaders from mobilizing staff towards the joint strike by public universities over salary enhancement that is taking shape.
